What We're Reading

Understanding Comics - The Invisible Art, by Scott McCloud

I've never been a fan of comics. They've never had the attraction for me that they've had for many of my friends. I considered them to be childish and somewhat silly, crudely drawn with poor stories. There were exceptions of course, notably Maus, but I couldn't find many others. Scott McCloud's book challenged my views. He makes wonderfully interesting arguments for the consideration of comics as fine art, and he makes his points well. He uses the medium itself to present his points. At times the book is an examination of media theory; at other times it is an art history book; it touches on many subjects but seems very thorough about each one. By the end of the book, I had a new view of comics and a new appreciation for them. I would highly recommend this book to all artists, media theorists, and, of course, comics lovers.
